When contemplating rock music, we often experience a pounding in our chest from a fervent beat radiating through raging guitars and drums accompanied by the aggressive body language of artists performing it. But why did rock become a steamroller of musical expression? What foundational characteristics made it so captivating?
Rock music is notorious for having a firm backbeat, usually in 4/4 rhythm, and performed by bands that include electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and at least one lead singer. Over the years, rock lyrics surrounded several themes such as life struggle, drugs, pain, sex, rebellion against “The Establishment” and other social concerns. It has also influenced the prevailing societal lifestyle, attitude, culture, and fashion trends. The songs of this genre are composed specially to force listeners to tap their feet and shake their heads and body along with rocking beats.
Electric guitars are the backbones of rock music that provide a layer of edgy sound that is a prestigious feature. The role of rhythm guitars and bass is to give that remarkable groove texture between the empty spaces of drum beats. The drum kit is like an unsung hero that is usually placed back in a live performance but has an impactful contribution in presenting thunderous beats and complex rhythms that are a hallmark of rock music.
Rock’s attributes aren’t only about the use of instruments and sound but also about the message, lyrics, and vocals. A rock band gains recognition by the message their songs hold, in addition to the voice and performance of the lead singer. The lead singer’s job is to administrate the work of other band members and focus on narrating messages along with hitting the high notes that give rock music its identity. A rock song is often structured in a verse-chorus pattern, sometimes interspersed with a bridge or an instrumental solo. Verses - are meant to set the background. The chorus endows the emotional climax, and Bridges insists on a new perspective. The Rolling Stones, coming from England too, contributed a gritty touch to the genre. The era of The Beatles evolved into the roaring sounds of Led Zeppelin, Queen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, etc., creating a period where powerful guitar riffs and dynamic performances took centre stage in the 1970s. Queen, Bon Jovi, and David Bowie popularised glam rock- Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to Heaven are two of the most evergreen rock songs- still loved by youngsters after decades of their release. The 80s pivoted sharply due to the rise of Guns N’ Roses with a mixture of glam and hard rock and Metallica characterised by fast tempos and aggressive musicianship. It also became a theme of various renowned Hollywood movies such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Almost Famous, School of Rock, and many more.

Rock music reached India in the 1960s through The Beatles, who performed in Mumbai during their world tour, leading to an obsession with rock music and catalysing the growth of a new music genre. Raga rock was attributed to the blend of classical Indian melodies and cool rock rhythms, which also contributed to the emergence of local bands like The Savages, Moheener Ghoraguli, The Combustibles, etc. Amit Saigal, an Indian rock musician, publisher, and impresario, founded the music magazine Rock Street Journal and promoted rock music in India. Amit was termed Papa Rock by the rock music community of India. In the forward decades, pioneering bands like Indian Ocean, Parikrama, Agnee, and Euphoria became the face of raga rock in India, producing extraordinary songs that resonated with Indians. It persuaded youngsters to follow their passion, motivated them to express themselves creatively with its rebellious nature and became the voice of aspiring musicians. It also assisted the growth of the Indian music industry. Fests like NH7 Weekender and Sunburn promote rock music and tempt- international and local talent. The Craze of rock music in India also led directors to produce films surrounding it- Rock On, Aashiqui 2, Rockstar, The BOYS [ 2003], and A 2ND HAND LOVER.
